How is it I went to the University of Texas for half of the ‘80s but never made it to Posse East? Maybe because I was working at another burger joint all those years, and I figured since the Posse had been there since 1971, it could wait for me. Thirty years later, we’re both still here. And sitting here with a beer listening to Queen and Grand Funk in a neon-lit room that probably hasn’t changed much since classic rock was just “rock,” I understand how Posse East has fed and watered generations of UT students and Longhorn fans.
► Double Bacon Cheeseburger: A good bar burger doesn’t need a homemade bun or field greens or dijon mustard. It just needs a third of a pound of good Angus chuck cooked medium well, doubled up, with crispy bacon, mustard and fresh lettuce, tomatoes and onions. This is a good bar burger. Need more? Jalapeños, pico and salsa are right behind you. ($8.45 plus $1.50 for bacon)
► On the side: These are some of the best potato chips in Austin, fried to order and thick enough to build a dynasty, with skins left on and just the right amount of salt and grease. They’re better even than the Posse’s armored french fries. ($1.50 with a burger)
► Wash it down: Posse East carries 20 beers on draft and at least that many in bottles, from Lone Star to New Belgium to Karbach, 512, Real Ale and Independence. Texas pints are $3 on Mondays, and domestic drafts are $2 on Tuesdays.
